This summer come and experience the unique art of Michael Angelo who has been inspired by nature since childhood. The Manawatū artist says he has only one mission – to make people smile.
Micheal’s colourful three dimensional carved paintings of native trees and birds transform our Bottle Creek Gallery into an enchanted forest. There are also artworks that feature sea creatures in reference to Porirua’s twin harbours.
Michael (Ngati Kahungunu/Te Arawa) began training in traditional Maori wood carving with Tony Kapua at Ohinemutu in Rotorua, 20 years ago. “He said it was natural for me and I shouldn't put down my tools”. He then worked with Te Maru Marsh at Te Poho-o-Tangiianui Marae in Napier, followed by 6 months at Mihiroa Marae in Paki Paki, Hawkes Bay. Micheal went on to gain a Diploma in Art and Creativity with Honours at the Learning Connexion in Wellington.
“I now carve in my own unique style, inspired from within and guided by the spiritual aspects of nature. I spent much of my childhood playing among trees, and for many years I was a gardener, so trees, birds, bees, and flowers inspire my work.
