Working across painting, objects and installation, artist Clarissa Lim investigates and mediates the conditions in which nature and culture collide.

Engaging with her personal cultural history as a point of departure, the work emerges as representations of selected plant species referencing migration, natural heritage, hybridity and trans-cultural positions. Central to her studio-based practice is the activity of painting; a place where the application of paint and colour begins negotiating the space between cultures, exercising the construction of vegetal forms and cultivating a site of becoming.

Clarissa uses this site to develop and activate a personal place proposing new and reimagined systems of ecology that are considerate of the hybrid and cross-cultural experience.

Born in Wellington New Zealand of Malaysian Chinese descent, Clarissa received an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London in 2018 and attained her BFA from the Ilam School of Fine Arts (UC), Christchurch in 2014.
