Kristin Stephenson (Hollis) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her first degree (B.A.Hons) was in Print-Making, Typography, and Graphic Design at Reading University, England. In 1968 Kristin moved to NZ, and in 1996 undertook her BFA (Hons) in painting at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in Christchurch. She graduated with First Class Honours in 1997, followed by an MFA (Distinction) in painting.

Text, words - their appearance and their play (which had drawn Kristin to, and still delight her in typography) and the physicality of both the materials and surfaces on which one might work have been, and are, critical to her work. They are in fact equally as necessary as the image. Kristin thinks and works in line and in letter. She is an image maker and a story teller, often indirectly, preferring to leave any specific interpretation to the viewer. Yet nor is she afraid of utter clarity and simplicity. She also uses differing modes of working, often in the same piece, much as one might use a language or dialect. The subjects are in a sense almost anything so long as they in some way touch and/or affect us.

TRACK will be the first properly autobiographically-based exhibition. This collection plots a route and way through to its expression, while indicating a definite observational stance and a sense of pursuit. It is also self-revelatory in a way Kristin has not permitted before - both in the imagery and in some of the titles.

The show consists of 4 very large (1.4 x 2.5 metres) drawings (with some painting) on paper, plus 45 much smaller (250mm x 175mm) mixed media works on paper. The opening is at 5.30pm Friday 9 February, and the exhibition will run until 5pm Friday 8 March.
