Laree Payne Gallery is delighted to re-open the gallery with a new exhibition by Maioha Kara. Titled Whakapiri, the exhibition extends upon Kara's thinking for her recently completed masters degree through Massey University. Concerned with connection, Whakapiri refers to Kara's relational approach to her practice via whakapapa and beyond that, to the Maori creation story. In a recent conversation with Hanahiva Rose for Art Collector, Kara states "I’ve found great comfort in this narrative, enamoured by the nothingness of Te Kore (the Empty Void), the stillness within Te Pō (the Perpetual Night) and the brilliance of Te Ao Marama (the World of Light and Life).”

Whakapiri see's Kara's timber works (in both rimu and birch) positioned alongside fine art prints which depict increasingly complex arrangements of iraira (dots).

Due to current alert levels we are unable to have an exhibition opening for Whakapiri. Despite this we are most pleased to be open once again. When visiting the gallery, please be sure to wear your mask and sign in at the door. Please note that we are also happy to meet you at the gallery by appointment.
