Michael Lett is pleased to present the fifth and final iteration of a year-long programme in the gallery's basement space, centred around the work of Julian Dashper.
'What I am reading at the moment' was first presented by Dashper in 1993 in his solo exhibition of the same name at National Library Gallery Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa, Wellington. This was Dashper's third presentation in the self-initiated project 'Artforum International'. The project began with Dashper buying advertising space in two consecutive issues of Artforum magazine to insert his own 'page work'. This resulted in international controversy over his sidestepping of orthodox critical establishments. Works from 'Artforum International' were subsequently included in exhibitions in public galleries in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
'What I am reading at the moment' includes every issue of Artforum magazine up to 1993 when the work was first exhibited. The chair was acquired by Dashper following its use in the photo shoot for the iconic 1983 Art New Zealand magazine cover, featuring the artists involved in the exhibition 'Seven Painters/The Eighties'. Ideas conveyed in this work that explore the intersection of abstract painting and New Zealand's relative geographic isolation from the international art world, were important and consistent aspects of Dashper's practice.
Opening Hours
- Tuesday - Friday 11am - 5pm, Saturday 11am - 3pm
- The gallery will be closed from 3pm Saturday 22 December. Reopening 23 January 2019 with an exhibition of new work by Richard Frater.
