‘Humans are always straining and leaning into the future.

Yet the majority of our lives are spent in the getting there, rather than the being there. The paintings in this show have been inspired by these in-between moments.

Waiting on Harvey street for the bus to come, getting up in the dark with my two year old and watching daylight arrive.

I find these moments strangely ambiguous.

They are the quieter times, of which we rarely speak, but that make up so much of our lives.’

Esther Bosshard was born in Wellington, in 1994. She graduated from the Dunedin School of Art with a Bachelor of Visual Arts in 2015, receiving both the Feldspar Scholarship, and the Webb Farry Award for drawing. Esther held her first solo show at Bowen Galleries, A small space in the world, in 2023. She currently lives Waitati, Dunedin with her partner Jamie and daughter, Mahala.

Working primarily in oil, with a penchant for strong colour palettes, and a tendency to apply paint like ‘icing on a cake’, Esther’s paintings are a manifestation of her quest for a simpler, quieter meditation on life – paying homage to the modest and the overlooked.
