New Zealand–born Korean artist Yona Lee cuts and welds hundreds of metres of stainless-steel pipe to form elaborate maze-like installations, bisecting and transforming gallery spaces and the activities that take place there. Incorporating a miscellany of surprising fixtures and fittings, from beds to bus-stop buttons, her structures are infused with an everyday surrealism. Her City Gallery work—the fifth in her In Transit series—spreads out across two downstairs galleries and the corridor that links them to the Auditorium. Form follows function as the sculpture tracks the movement of existing utility pipes. In Lee’s work, the gallery is container, site, and subject, with relationships between work, gallery, and audience kept in a constant state of flux.
