PHOTO OP. is a new curatorial platform for contemporary art in lens-based media in Aotearoa founded by artist, art writer, educator and curator Emil McAvoy.
PHOTO OP's playfully critical brand references photography's longstanding complicity in self-promotion. Founded on a nomadic project-based model, the platform aims to offer genuine opportunities for innovative, relevant and responsive contemporary art to practitioners from Aotearoa and abroad.
PHOTO OP. is project-led and also sells selected art work by negotiation where appropriate in partnership with other galleries and stakeholders. Selected works will also be commissioned through PHOTO OP. Editions.
PHOTO OP. operates both in physical sites and online, the first being a season of exhibitions in a new custom-built gallery within the Skar Image Lab premises in Kingsland, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, from June 2022 to early 2023.
The inaugural exhibition, Matt Henry's Double Grammar Zone ran 4 June - 16 July 2022.
'Air, New Zealand' curated by Emil McAvoy for PhotoForum, ran 10 September - 01 October 2022 onsite at Skar Image Lab and an expanded version will be released online in October at photoforum-nz.org.
