PHOTO OP. is a new curatorial platform for contemporary art in lens-based media in Aotearoa founded by artist, art writer, educator, curator, and consultant for artists Emil McAvoy.
PHOTO OP's playfully critical brand references photography's longstanding complicity in self-promotion. Founded on a nomadic project-based model, we aim to offer genuine opportunities for innovative, relevant and responsive contemporary art to practitioners from Aotearoa and abroad.
PHOTO OP. may also sell selected art work by negotiation where appropriate, and in partnership with other galleries and stakeholders. Selected works will also be released through PHOTO OP. Editions.
PHOTO OP. operates both online and in physical sites, the first being a season of exhibitions in a gallery space within the Skar Image Lab premises in Kingsland, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, from mid to late 2022. The inaugural exhibition, Matt Henry's Double Grammar Zone is showing from 04 June - 02 July 2022.
