We bring the best of art from around Aotearoa New Zealand to the Island and offer the best of Waiheke art to the world – so be sure to include the Gallery as a stop for things to do in Waiheke.
If you’re wondering what to do on Waiheke Island, be sure to add a visit to the Waiheke Art Gallery to your list.
Only thirty-five minutes from downtown Auckland by ferry, Waiheke is home to a lively community of New Zealand artists, painters, sculptors, jewellers, photographers, ceramicists and more. There is always something new to see or be inspired by.
Established in 1995 as a not-for-profit society, Waiheke Community Art Gallery promotes the visual arts and arts-related activities on our island and to visitors from across the world.
We’re open all year (Winter Hours: May - August 2024 - Closed Wednesdays), with a diverse exhibition programme displaying the work of more than 100 local and New Zealand artists annually. Our two national award exhibitions (Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award for 2D work, and the Small Sculpture Prize for 3D small works) attract entries from all over New Zealand.
Further Waiheke Community Art Gallery initiatives include:
• Perpetual Guardian Sculpture on the Gulf, our major biennial event and New Zealand’s leading contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibition which is set on the spectacular Matiatia coastal walkway.
• The Waiheke Art Map assists visitors to find artists’ studios and experience their work in situ.
• Opening the doors to Waiheke’s Architectural gems through our summer event the Wonderful Waiheke House Tour.
• Hosting a biennial Waiheke Artists in Residence Programme.
• Personal development through our Workshop activities facilitated by experienced tutors plus our art appreciation sessions and Gallery trips.
• Supporting community initiatives like Matariki, Treaty of Waitangi commemorations, Dark Sky Waiheke Island, Sculpt Oneroa, and the Waiheke Wine, Food and Art Festival.
• Working with local schools and community organisations like the Sustainability Centre, Waiheke Adult Learning, the Red Shed Arts Collective, Artworks Theatre and Catherine Mitchell Arts Centre.
We also have a wonderful Gallery shop that features high quality Waiheke ceramics, Waiheke jewellery and handcrafted artworks from around New Zealand including sculpture, paintings, glass, metal and mixed media works.
Have we mentioned that we’re also world famous?
We’ve been featured in the New York Times Publication, 36 Hours in Asia and Oceania, and The Lonely Planet on what to do on Waiheke Island.
