The Gus Fisher Gallery is excited to announce three more opportunities for artists to present new work in The Booth in 2020. These artworks will be exhibited alongside the concurrent exhibitions at Gus Fisher Gallery.

Proposals are welcomed from artists looking to present new and experimental practices in a distinct architectural space that housed the original telephone booth for the building in the days of Radio 1YA and TVNZ.

Proposals needn’t reference the history of the booth but should consider the full use of this area and its potential for display. Proposals will also be selected for how well they complement the topics explored in the concurrent exhibitions. For 2020 these are: gender fluidity, television broadcasting and morality tales.

Proposals will be selected for the strength of idea and its planned realisation, with original, site-specific concepts highly encouraged. The selection process will maintain the anonymity of the artist in order to counter categories of ‘emerging, mid-career and established’ to delineate an artist’s career stage.

Gus Fisher Gallery’s kaupapa stems from our dynamic history as former radio and television studios. We aim to create socially responsive, contemporary exhibitions with a strength in artist’s film and audio, showcasing emerging and established artists from across Aotearoa and overseas. The Booth ties into our kaupapa by creating a place where artists of all career stages can be shown together to great effect.

Application requirements:

Please submit a 500 word proposal that clearly describes your idea and your intentions for how you will use the space.

You can submit up to 5 images or video links to work that ilustrate your overall practice and intended concept for The Booth.

Please send your proposals to: gusfishergallery@auckland.ac.nz. Artist names will be removed prior to selection, in order for the proposal to be judged purely on merit.

Artists will receive:

A combined display fee and materials contribution of $500
