Applications now open for studio residencies

Relaunching this summer, Artspace is excited to announce that applications for their One Year Studio Program are now open. As part of The Gunnery transformation, they are offering an increase from 7 to 10 revitalised rent-free studios to artists and collectives. For the first time in the organisation's history they have also secured a 35-year sublease on the landmark heritage-listed building, enabling their vision to support 350 artists with free studios over the next 35 years.

A central tenet of Artspace's program, the studio residencies aim to reflect the diversity of contemporary artistic practice. The One Year Studio Program offers artists the space to work freely and test new ideas, as well as providing critical support, ongoing advocacy, professional development and opportunities to engage with our national and international peer networks.

The contracted residency period is from February 2024 to February 2025, however this year the selected artists will commence with the reopening of Artspace in The Gunnery building in late 2023.

Artists across all generations, career stages and art forms are encouraged to apply for this exciting program. Successful applicants will need to be based in Sydney for the duration of their residency.

Each year, the One Year Studio Program offers 10 selected artists:

  • The opportunity to take part in our program for a concentrated, 12-month period to support creative development
    - A rent-free studio in the heart of Sydney, with proximity to peer organisations including the Art Gallery of NSW, Museum of Contemporary Art, Firstdraft, National Art School and UNSW Art & Design
    - Flexible working space with 24/7 access
    - Universal access across the entire building
    - Communal spaces to connect with peers, colleagues and Artspace staff
    - Individual studio visits from Artspace staff throughout the duration of the program
    - Curatorial advocacy, including introductions to local and international curators through Artspace’s peer network
    - Opportunities to participate in Artspace’s expanded artistic program, including Open Studios, public programs, and learning and outreach initiatives with education and community partners
    - ‘Stop-work lunches’ hosted by Artspace, which bring together all the studio artists with the Artspace team and visiting national and international peers
