Become a volunteer guide: share the stories of art

For over 30 years, our dedicated volunteer guides have brought Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki to life, connecting visitors with art, history, and the stories that define us. Today, these guides continue to enrich our visitors' experiences, making art accessible to all.

As a volunteer guide, you’ll lead daily tours through our stunning exhibition spaces, sharing insights about our collection, the building's unique history and its cultural significance. Whether visitors come from across New Zealand or abroad, you’ll be part of creating unforgettable experiences.

Who we're looking for

We welcome volunteers from all walks of life who have a passion for art, culture, and history. If you love learning, enjoy engaging with people, and have an interest in New Zealand art, culture and history, we’d love to hear from you.

What we offer

Exclusive access: As a guide, you'll enjoy behind-the-scenes access to the Gallery’s collections, pre-exhibition tours, and regular briefings with our curators.
Training and support: You'll receive in-depth training that includes a combination of hands-on experience and ongoing learning from Gallery staff and experienced guides.
A rewarding community: Meet new friends, share your passion for art, and become part of a community that values creativity and learning.
Positive impact: Volunteers help create meaningful experiences for our visitors, whether they’re art lovers, families, and inspire the next generation of artists.
