Toi MAHARA, the Kāpiti Coast District Gallery invites you to submit artwork to be selected for the inaugural Toi MAHARA Young Artists Exhibition.

This bi-annual exhibition celebrates young and emerging artists, giving them the opportunity to showcase their mahi toi, skills and ideas in the visual arts. The review is open to all artists in the Kāpiti and Horowhenua regions aged from 13-25 years old at the time of entry.

Up to 50 entries will be selected by a panel of judges, and exhibited in Te Manawa Toi | Coastlands Gallery from November 2024 until January 2025. (This includes participation in the Kāpiti Coast Art Trail.) Artists participating in the exhibition may choose to offer their work for sale.

Inclusion in the exhibition gives young artists the opportunity to have their work exhibited in a public gallery, and to win cash awards.

There will be six awards made in the following categories:

• Open Award (open to all entries)
• Highly Commended Award
• Toi Māori Award (defined as based on or inspired by customary Māori artforms such as tukutuku, whakairo, ta moko, weaving etc.)
• Secondary Student Artist Award (artist at secondary school, age 13-18)
• Tertiary Student Artist Award (artist undertaking tertiary education, age 18-25)
• Digital Art Award (animated/digital art)
• People’s Choice Award (voted by visitors to the gallery, supported by Friends of Toi MAHARA)


Entry Criteria:

• Up to a maximum of 50 works will be selected for exhibition in 2024-2025.
• Artists may enter individually or as a collective/artist’s group (all members must meet age and location requirements).
• Each artist or group may submit a maximum of two works for selection.
• Entrants must be aged 13-25 years old at time of entry.
• Students who attend study outside the region are eligible to enter as long as their main home/place of residence is within the Council-defined regional boundaries of Kāpiti or Horowhenua.
• Students or artists currently living outside Kāpiti/Horowhenua are eligible to enter providing they have been former students of a • Kāpiti or Horowhenua college or wānanga.
• Work must have been made between 1 September 2023 and 1 September 2024.
• Work must not have been exhibited previously.
• Artworks must be maximum 2m square in any direction, finished and not wet or offensive-smelling, and must weigh less than 20kg.
• Artists with technical requirements for works in digital/other media should note these on their submission and discuss with the gallery before they enter their submission.
• It is recommended that work that is selected is professionally mounted if appropriate. Toi MAHARA can advise on this for selected works.
• Artworks generated by AI will not be accepted, and artists may be asked to supply original artwork or proof of process if there is any doubt.
• Please note, not all submissions will be selected. Artists who have submitted more than one work may have one or both pieces selected.


Timeline:

• Deadline for submissions: Monday 2 September
• Selection: 4–7 September
• Selected artists notified by Friday 18 October
• Exhibition opening and awards presentation: Friday 1 November 2024


How to enter:

  1. Fill in this form to let us know you are entering (this can be done any time, and you can change your mind).
  2. Create artwork and ensure your artwork meets the size restrictions of a maximum 2m in any direction, weighing no more than 20kg.
  3. If you have technical requirements for your artwork please discuss this with the gallery by emailing [info@toimahara.nz](mailto: info@toimahara.nz){.underline}, or calling 04 902 6242 BEFORE you make your submission.
  4. Fill in the application form and attach two high-resolution photos clearly showing your artwork. You will be notified about your entry by Friday 18 October.
  5. All artists who have submitted work will receive an invitation to the opening function, even if their work is not selected for the exhibition.
