The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is offering a permanent, full-time position providing the opportunity for someone with a demonstrated ability as a Gallery Technician to work in a dynamic and creative professional environment.
Reporting to the Exhibitions and Collection Manager, you will be a member of the Exhibitions team and will be involved in the handling and presentation of cultural objects; exhibition installation and dismantling; preparation of works of art for exhibitions and assisting with the internal maintenance of the DPAG's buildings.
Professional competencies:
-Committed to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and able to work professionally and sensitively with a wide range of ethnic and cultural groups.
-Comprehensive experience as a technician or preparator in an art gallery or museum environment.
-The ability to oversee and/or contribute to the installation, maintenance and de-installation of projects (including building, hanging and installing artworks, lighting and audio-visual equipment).
-The ability to draw up accurate plans and specifications for projects.
-A proven ability to design and build exhibitions furniture and fittings to professional museum standards.
-Comprehensive experience in a workshop environment and the ability to ensure that the Gallery's workshop is run efficiently and safely.
-An understanding of the value of cultural property and its care, handling, and display.
-An understanding and working knowledge of the systems, functions and uses of electrical and digital equipment - including lighting, computers, media players and audio equipment - as used for exhibitions.
-A sound knowledge of art practice in Aotearoa and the world.
-A good standard of fitness.
-Highly developed conceptual skills and the ability to work effectively on a number of projects simultaneously.
-Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as an effective member of a team.
-Ensure contractors fulfil their responsibilities.
-Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, as required to deal with a wide variety of exhibitions and to operate effectively within a tight team.
-Trustworthy, reliable and willing to abide by the Museums Aotearoa Code of Ethics for Museum Professionals.
-Committed to achieving Dunedin Public Art Gallery's vision and objectives.
