• The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery / Len Lye Centre is pleased to announce their 2020 Artists ‘In Residence’, who will take up month-long residencies in their own homes or studios.

The Govett-Brewster received over 160 applications to the 2020 Residency Programme, which were reviewed by a panel of Govett-Brewster curators.

The gallery are excited to be working with:

Sorawit Songsataya:

A 2020 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award winner, Sorawit Songsataya’s video-installation practice explores the many tangents that connect and redefine our understandings of subjectivity and ecology. Songsataya’s sculptural installation The Interior (Auckland Art Gallery), currently on display at Auckland Art Gallery, was recently featured in our Curatorial Spotlight Series.

Meg Porteous:

Meg Porteous works primarily in photography and film, considering common tropes in photography’s history to examine the relationship between truth and fiction. Her recent exhibitions include Uncomfortable Silence, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū (2020); Tears in rain, Hopkinson Mossman (2019); ʎʇǝıɔos, Mercy Pictures (2019); Tilt, Hopkinson Mossman (2018).

Yona Lee:

Yona Lee’s practice includes sculptural objects and installations that combine elaborate linear structures of stainless steel tubing with everyday objects of urban and domestic spaces. The work leaves itself open to various interpretations: structure or system, authoritarian or utopian, utilitarian or pointless. Lee’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Dunedin Public Art Gallery; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; and City Gallery Wellington.
