Over the winter months, gallery visitors have been transported by Christopher Ulutupu’s The Fall – an open-ended moving image installation that ponders on what might endure in the wake of chaos and change. From the sun-baked landscapes of Saint Bathans to the great hall at Olveston, Ulutupu’s work stretched out into a surreal narrative reflecting the artist’s time spent on residency here. He invited audiences to reflect on our times, and consider what might be ahead – what comes after the fall.

Although this exhibition has now come to a close, we are pleased to announce that this important work has been acquired for the permanent collection of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. It will remain here as a significant artistic response to this region and its histories, and as a representation of this important artist at a critical moment in time. Christopher Ulutupu is a leading contemporary artist of his generation, and The Fall will be the first of his works to be collected by Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
