Objectspace’s 2024 Courtyard Plinth commission has been awarded to Workshop6. Led by jewellers Anna Wallis, Mia Straka and Cheryl Sills, Workshop6 is one of the longest running collective makers studios in Aotearoa.

Learning to make jewellery often commences with the crafting of a simple copper ring: a fundamental exercise in metalwork and studio orientation. Over the years, Workshop6 has accumulated a repository of these practice rings, serving as a tangible record of the many hands that have honed their craft with the collective. More than 900 rings will feature in Workshop6’s commission for the Courtyard Plinth, which will launch in March 2024 with exhibition design by Micheal McCabe.

Throughout the development and display of this project, a series of workshops allowing participants to make two copper rings will take place – one ring to keep and the other to be added to the plinth installation.

The first copper ring making workshop will take place on Saturday 4 November 2023 at the Workshop6 studio in Grey Lynn, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Spaces are limited, register to take part here.

Objectspace's annual Courtyard Plinth Commission is made possible with support from the Jan Warburton Charitable Trust. Our deep gratitude to the Trust, and to all those who submitted applications for this exhibition opportunity.
