We’re searching for someone with a passion for contemporary visual arts to organise talks, workshops and events which complement and extend Blue Oyster’s exhibition programme. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, knowledge of Ōtepoti’s communities and enthusiasm for developing public programmes.
Blue Oyster exists to enable emerging and experimental arts practitioners to work in an innovative, experimental, and non-commercial environment. We aim to broaden interest in and understanding of contemporary arts by providing a forum for discussion and debate.
The successful applicant will use the gallery’s position as a nationally significant space for experimental contemporary art to connect Ōtepoti with national and international conversations across the sector. A key aspect of this role will be continuing to develop our understanding of our audiences: local, national, and international as well as in-person and online.
Our Public Programme & Communications Coordinator will establish and maintain strong, long-term working relationships with our audience and media outlets (online and print) to increase the visibility and the promotion of Blue Oyster and all its activities, including building upon and developing existing audiences and connecting to new ones.
While this role will be directly responsible for public programming and communications, the successful applicant will also work across the organisation to assist the Director in realising the strategic vision and goals for the gallery, enable individual artists to generate high quality and critically engaging projects and help with the day-to-day running of the gallery.
This is a development role and will be supported by existing staff and provided with professional development opportunities. This role is made possible by funding from Dunedin City Council Kaunihera-a-rohe o Ōtepoti.
This role is 25 hours per week. Hours will be worked Monday–Saturday and the role includes gallery sitting each Saturday 11am-4pm. You may be requested to work some evenings for openings and events in negotiation with the Director.
