Te Tuhi is inviting expressions of interest from contemporary artists who would like to develop a project between September and December 2023, under the auspices of Papatūnga.
Running until November 2024, Papatūnga is Te Tuhi’s development programme for arts practitioners delivered from O Wairoa Marae, an urban marae in Howick, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Papatūnga supports individual and collective development through a programme of short intensive and longer-term learning experiences that will develop and be shaped by the project team and participants over time. One strand of the Papatūnga programme is to support artists in developing a project of their own choosing. This strand is not prescriptive, but is process based, focusing on enabling artists to research and develop new work. There is no specific outcome required at the end of the project.
The project could be an existing project that you would like assistance developing, or it could be research time towards a new project. Artist projects accepted will contribute to the development of Papatūnga’s wider programme of wānanga for artists and creative practitioners.
The project period is from September – December 2023.
The successful artist will be offered:
- The option to use working space at O Wairoa Marae, Howick
- Administrative, pastoral and curatorial support from the Papatūnga team including Programme Manager Edith Amituanai, and Curator and Facilitator of Papatūnga James Tapsell-Kururangi
- Opportunities to meet with other artists, arts professionals and members of wider Te Tuhi communities through inclusion in other elements of the Papatūnga programme Facilitation of public events either at O Wairoa Marae or in other locations
- A project budget of up to NZ$10,000 to be developed and agreed with Te Tuhi
- At the end of the project period a report will be required summarising the artist’s experiences in a format to be agreed by the project team
