• Te Tuhi is delighted to announce the return of this incredible opportunity for 2020 for a New Zealand visual artist, in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture Park and with the generous support of philanthropists Sigrid and Stephen Kirk.

UPDATE: Te Tuhi and Yorkshire Sculpture Park are carefully monitoring the Covid-19 situation on a day-to-day basis. Our first concern is for the health and well-being of our community and all with whom we come in contact. Given the current situation worldwide, Te Tuhi and YSP will be flexible in setting the dates for the 2020 residency. The successful applicant may undertake the 3-4 week residency in 2020/2021 (previously advertised as September/October 2020), the exact period of which will be negotiated at a later date. We encourage all those considering making an application to go ahead and do so with this update in mind.

Te Tuhi will continue to communicate as early as possible any changes to the conditions of this opportunity. For enquiries please contact info@tetuhi.art.

For over 40 years, artist residencies have been at the heart of Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP). Last year YSP worked with partner Te Tuhi in Auckland, New Zealand to select artist Darcell Apelu as the Park’s first recipient of the New Zealand-UK Residency Award, and celebrated the opportunity to work with an artist from the country for the first time.

Building on this successful partnership and programme, YSP is offering another placement for an artist from New Zealand to stay on-site at YSP for up to four weeks in autumn 2020. Supported by philanthropists Sigrid and Stephen Kirk, the residency will comprise 3-4 weeks at YSP in September/October 2020 and include: hospitality and accommodation; access to metal and wood workshops, and basic studio space with a material budget of £500; curator critique feedback and up to half a day technical support; economy international airfare (up to the value £1500); internal UK travel expenses (up to £200) and artist stipend (£2000). YSP is 2 hours by train from London King’s Cross and we understand the importance of the capital city to any aspiring artist. As part of the residency, its benefactors generously offer use of a guest suite at their home in central London for up to 10 days.

The successful artist is not required to make an object or exhibition, but they will receive curatorial and technical advice if required. We are keen to support artists who have not yet developed a mainstream career and for whom this is likely to be their first working visit to the UK.

If this is of interest to you, please submit a PDF of no more than 5 pages including a short statement on your current practice with images of your work, and a simple outline of your plans if you were to be offered the residency. This proposal does not have to be definitive and can change during the course of the residency. Applications should be submitted to exhibitions@tetuhi.org.nz by 5pm, Monday 13 April 2020. Shortlisting and Skype interviews will take place in mid-April.

As a Registered Sponsor for Migrant Workers in the UK, YSP is required to follow a strict procedure to ensure correct visa paperwork is in place for all visiting artists. In advance of the residency, the recipient will need to apply for a Tier 5 Temporary Visa, with YSP as a sponsor.
