Album Release and Live Performance

You are invited to a special event hosted by Artspace Aotearoa and The Audio Foundation celebrating the album-launch of 961. The evening will feature a live performance connection between Tamaki Makaurau Auckland and San Francisco with artists Phil Dadson (sonic objects & invented instruments) (NZ), Tom Nunn (invented instruments) (USA), Paul Winstanley (extended electric bass) (USA), plus surprise guest performers.
961 is a one hour live performance that encapsulates the best of a 16 channel digital recording from 2016. This year, 961 will be released as a CD and booklet by Rattle Records NZ.
In 2016, Dadson undertook a three month artist residency at Headlands Centre for the Arts, (Sausalito, USA) during that time he converted his studio – building 961- into a multi-voiced instrument with long metal rods, wooden dowels and long wire zithers installed directly into floor and wall surfaces. The Tonethrone, a modified rocking chair, occupied centre-space. Dadson’s invented instrument had sonically tuned wood and steel rods with two sets of clashing cymbals that were operated by long wires attached to the front and back of the rocking action. 961 became the sonic playspace for a weekly collaboration between Dadson, Nunn and Winstanley, the result of which is celebrated in this new release by Rattle Records NZ.
