Join us on Saturday 30 November, 2pm for talks with two international artists; Jane Chang Mi (Honolulu; Los Angeles) and Torika Bolatagici (Melbourne), introduced by curator Ioana Gordon-Smith, to discuss the exhibition The Future of Our Kids at Te Uru.
The Future of Our Kids responds to two concerns; firstly, the ongoing political challenges the Pacific faces to seek recognition from culpable governments and the threat of nuclear waste seeping into the waters. The second is Aotearoa’s own history of anti-nuclear testing activism, the most well-known event being the 1985 bombing of the Rainbow Warrior. While a significant catalyst in galvanising New Zealand’s anti-nuclear position, it has become a historicised event, divorced from the present. Yet, for many across the Pacific, their nuclear moment has not ended.
Torika Bolatagici is a Fijian-Australian mother, artist and educator who produces multidisciplinary projects centering the counter-narrative of marginalised histories and knowledges through curatorial collaboration, photography, video, installation and publication.
As an ocean engineer and an artist, Jane Chang Mi assesses the post-colonial ocean environment through an interdisciplinary and research-based lens. She examines the narratives associated with the underwater landscape considering the past, present, and future.
The Future of Our Kids runs at Te Uru from 30 November 2019 – 1 March 2020. There is an opening function on Saturday 7 December from 4-6pm.
