Ngataiharuru Taepa’s exhibition Kia Āio Te Whenua takes its title from a karakia and looks to those everyday moments that offer a sense of stillness or tranquillity.
Taepa’s series of intricately cut wooden panels continue the artist’s exploration of kōwhaiwhai through contemporary materials and processes, with these works painted in the pale pastel colours of rangi and the rusty red tones of whenua.
This body of work was made as a response to the artist’s own desire to create something affecting and comforting in the face of overwhelming global turmoil.
