Landscape & Memory brings together a selection of works from a group of artists whose practices traverse place and time - their works brought together in this exhibition through a series of fortuitous moments and connections.
Mapua (pictured above) painted by Toss Woollaston c. 1938, captures a scene that will look familiar to those well acquainted with Toss’ work. In 1934 Toss and his family settled in Māpua and in the years that followed the local landscape became a prominent feature of Toss’ work. This work was painted outside the family home, a small clay brick house, built by Toss for himself and his family. Looking towards Nelson, the scene captures the vastness of Toss’ new environment. The apple packing shed, a marker of the rural vernacular of the Tasman region, just visible, tucked away under the towering ranges.
In Landscape & Memory, Mapua, sits alongside two anagama fired stoneware pots - one with the title, toss pop (a happy coincidence) - by Nelson based potter, Thomas Baker. Thomas’ works are not only connected to Toss by the two artists' physical locations when creating these works but are also beautiful visual echoes of Toss’ painting - the colours, textures, forms and materials of Thomas’ pots reminiscent of those found in Toss’ work.
The exhibition is now available to view in the gallery and online. For more information and if you would like to receive a copy of the digital catalogue, once it is available, please contact the gallery..
