Proposal for a Body posits that sound and text-matter are mediums that can be regarded as inherently queer in their expansive and corporally liminal states. Jo Bragg and Georgina Brett draw on the music and writing of artists Loren Conors and Kim Gordon to communicate through sound and poetry in a way that operates beyond conventional human language.

The use of sound and text as amorphous sculptural mediums that have the unique ability to describe complex ontological concepts as to what constitutes a body challenges what is aesthetically pleasing or acceptable in a gallery space. Bragg and Brett present an immaterial practice focused on the experience rather than the outcome.

This exhibition functions as a form of institutional critique within the institution, as both artists utilise their understanding of the way the art world works and their knowledge of noise artists from Aotearoa and abroad to present a body of work that questions bodily form.

A live public event will accompany the exhibition's opening night. This event will present a noise and reading performance piece with Brett on electric guitar using a range of found objects (rocks, hardware bolts, metal spring and goat-skin tail) and Bragg reading of textual-material.
