New Zealand artist Yona Lee gives sculptural form to ‘life on the move’– transient, itinerant, flat-packed and high speed.

Responding to the architecture of the gallery space, this site-specific commission is made from the structures found throughout global cities to usher and organise hordes of moving bodies. Its network of stainless steel pipes and functional forms take us through the vast in-between zones of public and private space.

Lee is also a professional cellist and draws upon her knowledge of music to structure her geometric compositions. In this work, which is partly inspired by a classical sonata, we can find slurs and repetitions, accented beats and tempo shifts. Its seemingly continuous line of steel pipe might be likened to a single cello note which is drawn out and developed in endlessly surprising ways.

Yona Lee is also exhibiting at City Gallery Wellington in an exhibition opening on 8 December 2018 - click here for more information.

Te Tuhi, Auckland is offering a limited edition art work by Yona Lee.
