In 2023, McCahon House Trust and Bundanon formed a partnership to offer an international residency exchange. The inaugural residency took place in August 2024 when Aotearoa artist Madison Kelly (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, Pākehā) travelled to Australia. In April 2025, McCahon House will host Australian artist Juanita McLauchlan (Gamilaaray).
Juanita McLauchlan (Gamilaaray) is an artist based in Wagga Wagga, Wiradjuri country, New South Wales, Australia.
Through her work, Juanita explores ideas of identity, displacement and cultural histories. Her practice spans across the mediums of drawing, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and jewelry and has been shown across Australia in both solo and group shows. In November she recently won the National Contemporary Jewelry Award.
Juanita is the first artist to be hosted by McCahon House as part of the McCahon House x Bundanon Exchange. While in residence at Parehuia, Juanita will continue the development of her most ambitious body of work to date, which will include the making of large-scale cloaks, native contact prints and a sound installation. The works will be presented later in 2025 at yilaa minyaminyabal maaru-ma-lda-y- soon everything will be healing, Juanita's first solo show with the Art Gallery of NSW.
Juanita intends to spend considerable time connecting with our local Iwi and Māori cultural practice, noting that the exchange between creatives from two indigenous groups in of great interest and value to her. Immersion into the landscape is also important to Juanita, giving her an oppourtunity to return to her drawing practice, which is the foundation from which her print and textile practices emerge.
