PLEASE NOTE: Applications and selections for this residency will go ahead, as advertised. We are working towards a Residency in October 2020, but will go on monitoring the situation. In the event that the Residency cannot safely and responsibly take place in London on the advertised dates in 2020, the same Residency will be offered to the selected artist on the same approx dates in 2021.

This opportunity will enable an early/mid-career New Zealand artist to undertake a fully-funded residency at Gasworks in London from 28 September – 14 December 2020 (11 weeks) - please see note above. Gasworks’ residencies are opportunities for self-led professional development, artistic exchange and experimentation.

The Residency Comprises:

24-hour access to a fully accessible studio at Gasworks, alongside other visiting artists and Gasworks’ permanent studio holders.

  • An Open Studio, or similar public presentations, at Gasworks

  • Single room accommodation within Gasworks Residencies House (a 3-story house, shared with 3 other artists-in-residence)

  • Basic living expenses in London

  • Economy return flights from the artist’s home city to London

  • Travel card (zones 1+2) for unlimited travel within central London for the duration of the residency

  • Administrative, pastoral and curatorial support from Gasworks (during office hours)

2020 will see the fifth consecutive annual residency for a New Zealand artist at Gasworks. Previous residents have been: Sriwhana Spong (2016) Katrina Beekhuis (2017) Hikalu Clarke (2018) Chrsitina Pataialli (2019)

Established in 1994, Gasworks is a non-profit contemporary visual art organisation working at the intersection between UK and international practices and debates. They provide studios for London-based artists; commission emerging UK-based and international artists to present their first major exhibitions in the UK; and develop a highly-respected international residencies programme, which offers rare opportunities for international artists to research and develop new work in London. All programmes are accompanied by events and participatory workshops that engage audiences directly with artists and their work.

The Gasworks Residency for New Zealand artists is is co-organised by Jan Warburton Charitable Trust and Stephanie Post, with the generous support of Libby and David Richwhite, Jenny and Andrew Smith, Sonja and Glenn Hawkins, Shirley-Ann and Rick Mannering, Dame Jenny Gibbs, Ngila Boyd, Dona and Gavin White, Rosemary and Tim Auld and others who wish to remain anonymous, in collaboration with Creative New Zealand and Elam School of Fine Arts, the University of Auckland.
