The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is offering a nine-month internship, providing the opportunity for someone with a demonstrated commitment to developing their curatorial practice to join our team.
The Curatorial Intern in Art is a training position for emerging curators in Aotearoa, supported by funding from Creative New Zealand in conjunction with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery; a Department of the Dunedin City Council. This position will reflect the Gallery's commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
The successful applicant will be a member of the Gallery's Public Programmes and Collection team. You will be working in all areas relating to the development and presentation of exhibitions, public programmes and publications, including working with toi Māori and contemporary art and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery collection.
This internship will require you to work collegially within a team environment. It involves working with artists, writing for exhibitions and publications, developing conservation and art handling knowledge, contributing to exhibition design and layout, interacting with members of the public, and contributing to the development and presentation of visitor programmes.
The DPAG has a dynamic and innovative exhibition programme. In 2021, this includes exhibitions such as Ralph Hotere: Atete, major projects with Sonya Lacey, the estate of Joanna Margaret Paul and Paemanu Ngāi Tahu Contemporary Visual Arts.
You will specifically assist, where appropriate, with the development and delivery of a major exhibition by Paemanu Ngāi Tahu Contemporary Visual Arts in 2021. To this end, you will be expected to have an understanding of mātauraka Māori and tikaka Māori. Competency in te reo Māori would be beneficial. This will be an opportunity to develop cultural knowledge and make connections with mana whenua and Kāi Tahu iwi.
