Te Tuhi is pleased to announce Nââwié Tutugoro and Gabi Lardies as the new graduate studio residents at Te Tuhi's Parnell Station artist studios. The artists each receive one year of free studio space within Te Tuhi Studios along with mentoring and studio visits from Te Tuhi’s Executive Director, Programme Manager and other arts professionals.

Nââwié Tutugoro is an artist based on Waiheke Island who graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in early 2021. Tutugoro’s multidisciplinary practice is centred around identity, transience, colonisation and hybridity. Tutugoro says, “Access to a studio space will allow for material experimentation and expansion.” Recent exhibitions include the spACE betWEen us, Blak Dot Gallery, Melbourne (2019); Moana Legacy, Tautai (2020); May Fair Art Fair (online, 2020). Tutugoro is part of the group exhibition Bedrock, currently showing at The Physics Room, Ōtautahi Christchurch until 30 May 2021.

Gabi Lardies earned a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2019 and a graduate diploma in Sociology and Creative Writing in 2020. She co-runs Pipi Press, a publishing house which focuses on critical, hopeful content encompassing the poetic and political. Lardies pursues a text-based art practice and works as a graphic designer. In 2018 she held a residency at Strange Haven, and in 2020 her work was included in Fluid Borders: Far Nearer at The Pah Homestead.

Lardies says, “I am thankful to have a flexible career which can accommodate my creative pursuits. However, it is never easy, and this residency will help immensely, in practical ways, and through validation and connection.”

Tutugoro and Lardies commence their residency in May 2021 and will be joining five artists who currently occupy Te Tuhi Studios. Te Tuhi’s Executive Director, Hiraani Himona, says, “We are delighted to have selected Nââwié and Gabi for these residencies, and cannot wait to see what comes out of their time in the studios. We also want to thank the Connells Bay Sculpture Trust and Jenny and Andrew Smith for their generous support, without which the Graduate Studio Residency wouldn’t be possible.”

Te Tuhi Studios are located on the platform at Parnell Station, 23 Cheshire St, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and are open to the public twice a year for Open Studio events. Te Tuhi Studios at Parnell Station is a project initiated by Auckland Art Fair co-director Stephanie Post and developed by Te Tuhi in partnership with Auckland Transport. The 2021 Parnell Graduate Studio Residency is supported by the Connells Bay Sculpture Trust and Jenny and Andrew Smith.
